 WHO IS JAMES MARTIN

I come from a long family history of Democrats. I was wearing Adlai Stevenson buttons when all the other kids had “I like Ike” buttons. I attended John F. Kennedy’s inauguration in 1961 as a Boy Scout in Washington D.C. I was also present at the Martin Luther King address on the grounds of the Washington Mall in August 1963.

Being a Democrat is fundamentally about your heart and your thinking and what one can do for the betterment and benefit of others. I have lived a life of work and service: from being on the school safety patrol in the 5th grade to membership in the Boy Scouts of America through High School, to being a paper boy, to working in college for a moving company and membership in the Teamsters Union, to working for Dallas Legal Services, to working for Child Protective Services, to being President of a Homeowners association in Old East Dallas in the ‘80s (fighting for code enforcement and better police patrolling), to being a member of the Dallas 2000 committee of the City of Dallas, to supporting First Methodist Church in Dallas by singing the Chancel Choir, to being a 36 year member and President of the Vocal Majority, a men’s singing chorus that puts on choral singing clinics with area school districts, to serving on various committees of the Dallas Bar Association.

I have been dedicated to the practice of law for 40 years, trying cases in the Civil, Criminal, Juvenile and Family courts as well as the Federal District courts. I have represented real people with real problems, some extremely complicated, that I have helped them solve. I was Board Certified in Family Law in 1975, the first year of the certification program and have attended each Advanced Family Law Seminar since 1974, its first year. I have devoted the majority of my 40 years of practice to Family Law.

I believe that I can show the patience and wisdom to allow litigants to present their case without prejudgment and expect an equitable and reasonable decision with the necessary follow-up to protect the children that have become involved in the legal process. I further believe that I have the knowledge, the experience, and the temperament to be of valuable service to the families and children of Dallas County. I am dedicated to proving what a good Judge is and how the court can be of service to the people of Dallas County.

Once again, as I announced during the Democratic primary, I have chosen not to accept campaign contributions from lawyers that will be practicing in the Family Courts. I believe that while their acceptance is not specifically unethical, it does, I believe, give the appearance of improper influence.

In conclusion, I give you my word that I think of the 254th Family District Court bench as a sacred trust and I will do all in my power to live up to the trust and confidence placed in me by the voting public.
