Judge Known for Innovative Programs will Help Redesign Texas Foster Care System

DALLAS, Nov. 19, 2009 – Judge Bill Mazur of the 304th Juvenile District Court has accepted an appointment to the Public Private Partnership Commission, charged with redesigning the Texas foster care system.  “It is a huge undertaking but one well worth the time for our abused and neglected youth,” said Judge Mazur.  “We have to do more.”  Texas is currently first in the nation in infant deaths, with more than double that of any other state, and ranks a lowly 44th in the nation in dollars spent per capita to prevent  child abuse.

Judge Mazur has earned a reputation for out-of-the-box thinking and involvement in juvenile justice beyond his own courtroom.  Since taking the bench in 2006, Judge Mazur has implemented programs such as Project Spotlight, a partnership with every municipal police department in Dallas County to provide better police protection in communities combined with probation officers working closely with at risk youth to reduce juvenile crime.  The Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative has also help reduced criminal recidivism among Dallas County’s youth. Organizing for Health CareReports from the Hill are that the first vote on health care reform in the Senate could come this weekend or early next week. It will be close, and every vote will count.  To put pressure on key Senators, Organizing for America and area Democratic clubs are hosting phonebanks this week to call supporters in Arkansas and Louisiana and ask them to get more involved by calling their Senators to urge a 'yes' vote.

We have phonebanks all week, all over the county.  I hope all of you will join and invite others.  We can't lose the momentum.

Organizing for Health Care

The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote Saturday evening on a historic health care reform bill.

This Saturday, OFA volunteers will be canvassing neighborhoods around the state to urge supporters to call Congress THAT DAY to voice support for health care reform. There are 14 canvasses in North Texas alone. I hope you can come out to help make sure the phones on Capitol Hill are ringing off the hook.

The American people have been waiting decades for health care reform. The time is now. The weather looks to be brilliant. Come out and help push the bill over the finish line.
